Statistical Significance: The Basics

The biggest A/B testing mistake is declaring a winner too early.

Statistical significance tells you how confident you can be that the observed difference is real, not random noise. Most A/B testing platforms target 95% confidence (p < 0.05) as the threshold — meaning there's a 5% chance the result is a false positive.

Practical implications:

  • Run tests for a minimum of 2 full weeks, regardless of when you hit significance — week-over-week traffic patterns vary and can skew early results

1. Testing for Too Short a Period

If you're running five tests on the same page at the same time, the traffic segments overlap and the results contaminate each other. Test one thing at a time, on one page at a time.

4. Testing the Wrong Metric
